People who live in parts of California are going to be faced with a water emergency later in March. This is going to be caused by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) shutting down the major water pipeline to the area from March 18 to 27 in order to retrofit a water treatment plant in LaVerne so that it will better be able to withstand seismic activity. While the ultimate results of the shutdown will profit the Pasadena area in decades to come, for the duration of the outage, people are going to have to cut back and make do without water. During that time, citizens would be wise to have some emergency water treatments in place to ensure that they have sufficient clean water to drink.
During this shutdown, water in the area will be completely stopped. Instead, the city has set forth a plan of filling the city's reservoirs with groundwater from both local sources and brought in from the MWD. Even so, the measure will result in a severe cut-back in the water available to the populace. Instead of the 250 million gallons of water that the town would normally consume during this time period, only 150 million gallons will be available.
Since the Pasadena area receives 60% of its water from the facility that's affected, the city council has issued a Level 4 water supply shortage emergency. It also put a strict ban on outdoor watering stating that if all the people don't buckle down and do their part, they could run completely out of water before the shutdown period is over. Citizens need to know where sources of water are in and out of their homes as well as have emergency water treatment materials available just in Case the worst Case scenario should happen. Water taken from toilet tanks, your water heater, garden hoses, and any other reservoirs in your home as well as from local streams and lakes will all need to be filtered before they can be consumed.
Even though this is a man-made emergency, it's still very real. It's the same thing that would happen in your neighborhood or community if the existing water treatment facilities became damaged in some way, and it's important for everyone to be prepared. Pasadena is fortunate in their "emergency" because it was planned ahead of time, and they know exactly when it will happen. Unfortunately, in other water shortage situations, you may not have any warning at all. Many different types of water emergency treatment materials are available for private use.
